***** "It’s gifts like these that mean the most and are remembered forever"

National Friendship Day is coming up on August 2nd this year (the first Sunday of August!).
This particular day may not necessarily be one you've scheduled in your calendar, but when you see it coming up, it gives that little nudge... that reminder to actually reach out to the friends you love instead of just thinking about reaching out.
It's not about grand gestures. It's simply about the friends in your own life... the ones who've earned a real place in your story.
So with Friendship Day on the horizon, we wanted to talk a little about actually showing up for these friends... in the small, steady, "I see you and I'm here" kind of way.

You may have a friend group chat where someone drops a "hope everyone's doing well!" into the void every few months. It's not nothing... but it's also not really a check-in. It's more like proof of life.
It's important to find ways to foster these friendships and not let them fade, which can happen far too easily. A few unanswered texts can turn into a few weeks. A few weeks may turn into "we should really catch up soon." And before you know it, months have gone by since you've talked to someone who used to know everything about your life.
It's not that we love our friends any less. We think it happens because being present takes intention, and intention is the first thing that gets squeezed out when life gets busy.
Real presence asks a bit more of us. It means noticing when a friend's texts have gotten shorter. It means remembering that their mom's surgery was this week. It means asking a follow-up question instead of moving straight to what's going on in your own life.
The tricky part is that none of this requires more time than the group chat message does. It just requires more attention. And attention, more than anything else, is what tells someone they matter to us.

Presence doesn't have to mean a weekend getaway or a three-hour coffee shop catch-up (although the two of us will never say no to either).
Here are 5 of the most meaningful check-ins we've had with friends, each one taking less than five minutes.
We actually have a friend in our circle who's a master at this... we call it her superpower. She always remembers to ask the specific question, follow up on the follow-up, and check back in without ever being asked. Really, it comes down to one thing: she pays attention. And every one of us feels a little more loved because of her.

If you want something a little more structured, we like to think of a good check-in as answering three questions for the other person, even if you never say them out loud:
"A good friend knows all your stories. A best friend helped you write them."

Sometimes a friend is going through something that a check-in text just can't hold. A loss, a diagnosis, a hard season they're white-knuckling through. In those moments, we've found that gathering the people who love them, all in one place, saying all the things they might not otherwise hear out loud, can mean more than almost anything else you could give.
That's actually a big part of why we started Woxbox... we wanted an easy way for a whole circle of friends to come together and put their words of kindness in one place, so the person on the receiving end could feel, all at once, just how loved they really are. Sometimes the most present thing you can do for a friend is to make sure they hear from everyone who cares about them, not just you.
Whatever you do this Friendship Day... a text, a walk with a friend, a coffee catch-up, or a whole group of friends sharing their words of kindness... the goal is the same. Let the people you love know that you noticed, you care, and you're not going anywhere. 💛
With Kindness,
Carey and Cindy

What are some simple ways to check in on a friend? Some of our favourites are the small things... sending a song or photo that made you think of them, asking about that one specific thing they mentioned last time you talked, or just saying "I've been thinking about you" out of nowhere. None of it takes more than a few minutes, but it's the kind of thing that really sticks with someone.
How often should you check in with a close friend? There's no magic number here... it really depends on the friendship. What matters more than frequency is consistency. A quick voice memo every couple of weeks can mean just as much as a long phone call once a month, as long as your friend knows they can count on hearing from you.
What do you say to a friend going through a hard time? You really don't need the perfect words. Something as simple as "I'm thinking about you and I'm here, whatever you need" goes a long way. What matters most is that you actually follow through and check back in, rather than sending one message and disappearing.
When is National Friendship Day? It falls on the first Sunday of August every year... this year, that's August 2nd, 2026. Joyce Hall, the founder of Hallmark, first popularized the idea back in 1919, and it was later formally recognized in the US in 1935. What we love about it is that it's specifically about celebrating your personal friendships, which makes it the perfect excuse for a check-in.
What's a meaningful gift for a friend who says they don't need anything? Those are usually the friends who'd appreciate something they can't buy for themselves... like hearing, all in one place, everything the people in their life love about them. A collection of heartfelt messages and memories, like a Woxbox, tends to mean a whole lot more than another candle.
